California Provides COVID-19 Sales Tax Relief
California Provides COVID-19 Sales Tax Relief
As COVID-19 (a.k.a. New Coronavirus) continues to spread and hold our businesses and economy hostage, State governments are starting to respond with much-needed relief by offering things like filing and payment deadline extensions for sales & use tax returns. In some cases, penalties and/or interest due to late payments are being waived as well.
Our team of California sales tax experts is tracking the situation for you, so you can focus on the things that matter most to you. To date, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) has issued the following taxpayer relief:
- Small Businesses with less than $5 million in annual taxable sales, may defer payment on up to $50,000 of sales and use tax liability for 12 months without incurring any penalties or interest. See full relief details here.
- Small businesses now have until July 31, 2020, to file first-quarter returns. CDTFA is providing this three-month extension for a tax return or tax payment to any businesses filing a Q1 2020 return for less than $1 million in tax. Qualifying taxpayers are not required to file a request for extension or request relief from penalty or interest.
